My 27 y.o. Son Mikhael Romanenko, was Killed in SF.
My son, Mikhael Romanenko 27yo, was killed in SF on 1/19/25. He was viciously killed by speeding Tesla with 98mph in a 25mph street (Harrison & 6th.) Since then, I came across public information in SF Civic Trial Report (June 2025) on traffic fatalities (the highest ever at 43 in 2024 that is 10 years into Project Vision 0 with the goal to bring fatalities on the streets of SF to 0. The citations for traffic offenses given dropped by 87%. DME does not receive information on drivers that killed and allows them to stay on the road per CalMatters reports "License to Kill" April 2025. Per Sheriff Bianco for California Insider (September 2025), the crimes committed are downgraded, criminals are not charged, and released. The lack of enforcement and no consequences leads to permissiveness and lawlessness.
My life has been destroyed. I live in agony. That senseless killing should not have happened. If the drivers know that they will have to pay a stiff penalty for breaking traffic rules, will loose their driving privileges for repeat offense, or loose freedom for many years if they hurt or kill someone, the situation on the roads will change. The carnage of the road kill will slow down. But it has to be enforced and implemented. The adequate consequences will deter others from breaking traffic laws as well.
As for now, the court released my son's killer on his own recognizance despite the fact that he has a long rap sheet of traffic violations and the vicious killing of my son. Attitude towards criminals has to change and stiff penalties of many years in prison should be imposed instead of releasing the killer out to live his life after his total disregard to safety of others along with killing.
I hope you will be reporting on this court case and will advocate for changes in enforcing the laws for safety of all residents of SF.
